The Ed Norman Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Ed Norman Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial aid to a student of Newfoundland and Labrador descent. This Fund is fully sponsored by the Lower Mainland Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Society of BC. The first scholarship was awarded to Lana Spurrell in 1999 who studied Advanced Marine Systems Design at Memorial University's Marine Institute near St. Johns, NL.
In January 2005, the award of $500.00 was awarded to Kimberly Power, a student at the College of the North Atlantic in the Mining Technician Program. A second scholarship of $500.00 was given to Dean House in April 2005. Dean is also attending the College of the North Atlantic, at the St. Anthony Campus in the First Year Engineering Technology Program. See article in North Atlantic College News. A third scholarship recipient of $500.00 was Kim Templeman in December 2005. Kim is also attending the College of the North Atlantic, at the Bonavista Campus in the Office Administration Program.
History of The Ed Norman Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Lower Mainland Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Society was registered as a non-profit society in British Columbia in 1995. One of its main purposes is "to become active, visible and involved in the community by making financial donations to charitable causes such as the establishment of a Scholarship/Bursary Fund or other worthy causes as approved by the membership". The Society hosts socials and fundraisers and also receives donations from private individuals to raise monies.
Soon after the Society's formation, the members chose to have funds set aside to be used for a Scholarship Fund. In 1999, Ed Norman joined the Society. Using his expertise as a lawyer, Ed, along with other committee members, drafted guidelines and protocol for the Society's Scholarship Fund.
As a young person, Ed lived in Port Union, Trinity Bay and moved to St. John's when he was 13. After high school, Ed completed his undergraduate degree in political science at Memorial University and in 1976 completed his law degree at Dalhousie University. On October 12, 2000, Ed Norman died suddenly at the age of 47. For his hard work, dedication and love for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Society renamed the fund - The Ed Norman Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The Lower Mainland Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Society takes great pride and pleasure in donating funds to various post-secondary institutions to assist a deserving student in their studies.
