History

Newfoundland and Labrador has a culture and history which is unique in North America. Everyone who was born and/or has lived there has been indelibly imprinted by the warmth and laughter which is to be found in every corner of the province. Most of us, who were lucky enough to be born and spent our formative years there, are quick to remind others that we are more than just Canadians. We are Canadians AND Newfoundlanders. We seem to have a deeply felt need to remember our roots and to preserve our connection to the 'Rock'.

In the mid 1990's a small group of Newfoundlanders, living in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, gathered to enjoy the kind of social times they remember and to maintain their cultural ties. The establishment of a society evolved from these small gatherings - a Society with an elected Executive Committee which organized dinner dances, thereby attracting others of Newfoundland and Labrador heritage, as well as people who had an affinity for the province and its people. By 1995 the scope of planned social activities and the growth in membership warranted registering the society with the BC government as a non-profit society, with a duly approved constitution and by-laws.

Since that time the Society has been generous in its contributions to charities and to the Ed Norman Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was founded in 1999. The scholarship fund is a separate entity with monies deposited in interest bearing vehicles at a local chartered bank. Each year since its inception the interest earned is used to help fund the cost of post-secondary education for Newfoundlanders or Labradorians. In addition to donating to the scholarship fund and local charities the Society has approved funding in response to special requests.

Funds for these causes are raised through social events, which are open to everyone. The work involved in planning and organizing events is carried out by volunteer members. The elected Executive consists of a President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary and three Members-at-large. One Member-at-large agrees to 'wear the hat' of Social Chairperson, with the responsibility of forming a Social Committee which we can thank for our many and varied events. To be able to have this much fun and enjoyment with a wonderful "bunch from home" is a great feeling. Come join us! We'd love to have you!
